Playgroups
The Protocol at a Glance
Below is an overview of the full playgroup process that can be used as a checklist for running groups. Before running playgroups, be sure to read the full protocol and train staff or volunteers to fill playgroup lead, assistant, and runner roles.
1. GATHER HANDLERS
Playgroups generally require 2-3 people at minimum for 20 to 60 minutes depending on the number of dogs who will be interacting together, their energy level, and how well-known the dogs’ play styles are. See What do you need?
2. PREPARE THE PLAY YARDS & EQUIPMENT
-
Check the yard and clean up unwanted toys or other items. See Setting up the Play Space
-
Gather needed gear including fight kit. See Gear Checklist
3. PLAN THE PLAYGROUP
-
Create and consult a list of all dogs eligible to play in group based on behavior information, health status, and dog weight from staff, volunteers or previous owners. See Considerations for Selecting Dogs for Play Group
-
Choose which dogs will be rotated in to play together, and what order they will be brought in.
-
Decide which introduction methods to use for dogs who have not met before based on Dog Introduction Methods and Dog Play Profile Sheet, and previous Playgroup Notes, by choosing from the following:
-
Write introduction plans in the Playgroup Planning Worksheet.
4. LEAD & ASSISTANT(S) RUN THE PLAYGROUPS
-
Introduce dogs into group
-
Playgroup leader requests dogs from group list for runner to bring out.
